Proper porch design is not possible without an
understanding of the structural components.
While it is not within the scope of this Guide to provide detailed instruction in the actual construction of a porch, we feel it is important to have at least a basic knowledge of the structural aspects, as they greatly effect the overall success of any porch.
Further, the misuse of certain structural parts makes it very difficult to apply the decorative components properly. For example, if the front face of the Beam over your Posts is not aligned with the front face of the Posts themselves, it will be more difficult to properly use Post Face Brackets, should you so desire.
Following is a "cataloging" of the primary structural components found on most porches. Obviously, structural members such as Turned Porch Posts can also be decorative.
