Appliques can be applied to any reasonably flat surface to add low cost decoration. For example, use below eaves or install on plain boards for use in place of Spandrels, as discussed below.

Applique Spandrels
Appliques can be installed on plain boards as an extremely cost effective substitute for Spandrels, as shown in photo at right. Read more about Applique Spandrels and see Appliques used on porch beams at Porch Examples 41, 49, and 50.

Post Face Appliques
Appliques installed on the face of Porch Posts add extra decoration at nominal cost. See photo at left and read more about Post Face Appliques.

Using Appliques as Spandrels and as Post Face decoration are perfect ways to stretch your Porch decorating budget while creating a unique and personal outdoor room. Another exterior use - along the top trim board of windows or doors.

Inside, Appliques are sometimes applied to fancy kitchen vent hoods or to islands. Headboards and mantels offer possibilities, and mirrors, built-in shelving, plain furniture, and picture frames are also candidates.
